In my business writing course at UNCW, one of the main outcomes that I utilize the most is to “learn strategies for collaborating with colleagues in online and culturally diverse environments.” I will find this to be the most useful in my professional career since I’m majoring in Clinical Research. This aspect of the medical field does majority of their communication online; whether that’s between people here in the U.S or others within various countries nationwide. With every project, obstacles are destined to arise. Some obstacles/ issues I believe may arise while completing my Nest Realty project for this course is not being able to get in touch with my group partners, or not having a clear understanding of the outcomes of this project. Ways I plan to overcome these issues are to keep an open line of communication with my group partners, and also with my professor. This will enable me to have a clear understanding of what component of the project is my responsibility so that my partners are not picking up my slack. Also, with being able to communicate with my professor, I’m able to have all my questions answered should they occur. In correlation to my future career in Clinical Research it is crucial to communicate with colleagues and project managers to ensure the assignments are being done properly and promptly.
I have learned so much from this course thus far. For example, conciseness is a major skill I am able to take away from this course. With majority of our assignments having a word count restriction, I had to learn how to pick and choose the concepts and ideas I felt were the most supportive of my argument in order to narrow down my message. More specifically, from this project I’m expecting to learn how an actual business uses social media. Since I’ve learned about each concept separately, such as the three rhetorical appeal (pathos, logos, and ethos), and visual rhetoric. I’m eager to see how they work together collectively. I will be further examining the way these social media interactions impact the business itself. With every project that involves a business I believe some background research should be done first. With that being said I think me watching a interview with an associate of Nest Realty enabled me to get a better understanding of what the business does and how. Now I’m able to look at their social media sites, and have a more improved perspective of what they are saying.
In this Business Writing course we have covered many concepts, but I find rhetorical appeals to be the most useful for this project. I’m interested to see how Nest Realty uses logos, ethos, and pathos on social media to contribute to the overall success of their business and its credibility. I think this project and the skills I gain upon its completion will only help me to have a better understanding of how crucial social media presences can be. I think I will be more sensitive to detecting proper or improper social media tactics for any business I work for after graduation.
