The Impact of Social Media

Social media is one of the most crucial aspects of whether a business thrives to its fullest potential or not. In today’s world of business many consumers  turn to social media before they decide to buy from a particular company. On the contrary, social media is also an outlet to express one’s positive or negative experiences with a particular business. The textbook Business Communication: Polishing Our Professional Presence (Shwom) evidently explains the impact of social media has on businesses. Numerous people assume that because they are attuned with communicating on facebook, they are well-rounded social media communicators. Shwom and Snyder state that effective communication through social media requires strategic planning. Positive and negative messages regarding a business are both portrayed on social media. Positive messages will always include how the viewer will benefit. A negative message will contribute to the liking and other component that may contribute to the downfall of that business

MP 1 persuasive screenshot.png

In chapter five of our text, Communicating Persuasive Messages, it defines persuasion as influencing an audience to agree with your point of view (Shwom and Synder 159). This posting is persuasive by offering its audience free coffee on a Monday, which many may believe to be the most challenging day of the week. PPD is an acronym for Pharmaceutical Product Development, which is a  leading global contract research organization that provides drug discovery, development, lifecycle management and laboratory services. PPD’s ultimate goal is to apply innovative technologies, therapeutic expertise and withhold a commitment to quality to help clients and partners accelerate the delivery of safe and effective therapeutics (“About”). According to their social media site, The Peddler Cafe is a startup business of a young Wilmington couple who have a passion for coffee and bicycles. With this couple forming a business on their own, they have chosen a great institution to spread their love for coffee.

In this post The Peddler Cafe has a motive of getting all of the employees to come together and socialize. This implies that PPD is a friendly and family oriented company to work for. In regards to the reading "Rhetoric in social media,” rhetoric is the art of using language to persuade or impact others. This post was persuasive in getting people to attend the event because all the necessary components for the composing process were utilized.Within this post there was a purpose and desired outcome of the employees attending, the needs implied was a cup of coffee on what’s seemed to be a “hard” day of the week, the information about the event was listed, and the medium chosen was effective as well (Shwom and Synder 160) .

In our text, some of the main focus points of persuasive messages were: information needed, motivation and benefits, and potential resistance. All of these things were covered in this post. The information needed for the audience was the date, time, and location of the event. In this posting, it states that the event is on Mondays from 7- 10:30am at the Peddler Cafe of the PPD in Wilmington, NC. This made it easy for the audience to read and decide if this place would be easy to find, or if the time would fit into their schedule. The motivation within this post is the fact that there is free coffee on a Monday. Everyone is probably dragging into the office that morning and in need of a pick-me-up. So in my opinion,  the day of the week they chose was very motivational to the audience.  Also, with Peddler Cafe just beginning their business, people will also be more likely to support them. Benefits of the audience, would be a free cup of coffee, meeting new people, and the possibility of receiving a coupon to the “best asian restaurant in town.” All of these would catch the reader’s attention and make them want to attend the event. With PPD being such a large corporation, a new employee will find this post to be the most beneficial for they may see it as a great opportunity to meet others, and begin to build their own network within the company. I believe that the idea of potential resistance is extremely scarce in this post. The only types of resistance that this post may encounter are people being too busy to take time out the day to grab coffee and socialize, or people that may not be very sociable.

(Image 2)

Adversely, I will be analyzing this ad (see image 2) for Verizon that was posted by PCMag. PCMAg is “ the leader for rigorous, labs-based comparative reviews of computing, consumer electronics, business technology, and internet products” (PCMag).  Another key factor about this company is they give independent reviews of the latest products and companies to ensure that people are receiving the highest quality for their money. As many are aware, Verizon has great service (“bars everywhere”). Their testers drive a million miles a year to make sure their customers services are working as well as possible, and nearly all of Verizon’s towers have backup generators to keep them working during blackouts (“Better Matters”).  In spite of all this, Verizon has also  been well-known for their excessive charges and gimmicks to draw customers in or to extend existing customers’ contracts. Although this ad wasn’t created directly by Verizon, I think it exemplifies the impact of content marketing. According to our text, content marketing is providing information that the audience values (Shwom and Synder 184). With this ad exposing information about the leading cellular network (“Better Matter”), it makes the viewer want to read and research more about the negative message depicted.

As stated in Chapter 5 of our text, argumentation is defined as taking a position, supporting the position with reason, and then documenting these reasons with evidence (Shwom and Synder 166). In order for the evidence to be deemed as reliable personal experiences can be used to be supportive of an argument (Shwom and Synder 168) With that being said, I’d like to touch on some of my personal experiences with Verizon.  I have been on a joint plan with Verizon for about 3 years now, and I have lost count of the times my parents have complained about something regarding this company. For example, I recently cracked my iPhone 5 screen and called Verizon to inquire about a replacement since I have been paying insurance on this phone for about 2 years. Even with insurance, I still would have had to pay $150 for a replacement phone. Not only did this infuriate me, it also made me question the reasoning behind paying a monthly fee for insurance on the device when it doesn’t cover anything.  I turned down this option. Then I asked when my contract would be ending. I was informed that my contract had been extended for another 6 months, because my parent had accepted an offer they were making. This is an example of how they “screw over customers.” The offer they were making, had an underlying catch to it. My parents agreed to the offer of getting 30% off the bill, without knowing that their contract would be extended for an extra 6 months along with the offer. With my personal experiences, I am able to relate to this ad. With this ad circling the web, other viewers will be able to understand the mission of PCMag.

This flyer is very straightforward with pointing out the problems faced when one has services with Verizon. Not only does this message result in prospective customers refraining from using these services, it also causes current users to want to terminate their contracts earlier and maybe even file a claim against Verizon. I believe with the message being so blunt, it grabs the viewers attention quickly. It can also encourage current users to post reviews of their services as well, which is described as social proof in our text (Shwom and Synder 187). This would make Verizon a less valuable company. Another thing that is factual regarding this ad is that every negative example used to go against Verizon has been stated in their previous ads as a “positive” feature within their company. So not only does it make viewers not want these services, it also deems Verizon as falsifiers and unreliable, which can result in negative reciprocity (Shwom and Synder 188). If a few friends have had negative experiences with Verizon and they tell their other colleagues, then those colleagues would be less likely to consider purchasing services through Verizon. It’s interpreted  that this cellular network can’t deliver the services they speak so highly of.

With both of these postings being made by vastly different businesses, it exemplifies how these messages on social media can either be depicted as postive or negative to the viewers, PCMAg has been around for many years, whereas the Peddler Cafe was recently created. As a result, PCMag is trying to maintain their clientele and credibility, while The Peddler Cafe is attempting to establish the two. Both PCMag and Peddler Cafe missions are based on the idea of pleasing the consumer, and being sure they have the best quality coffee, and technological reviews. This shows how both messages can be relatable. Even though businesses wish to achieve great heights, it's crucial to understand that social media can be the root of many issues, or the the extra push to take a business to the next level.

Progress Report (Memo)

Nest Realty has created a well-rounded social media presence thus far. From their facebook page to their official website, they do an awesome job incorporating ethos and visual rhetoric. Thus far in this service learning project, my team has collectively found information about Nest Realty’s social media presence that we feel could be utilized in a more beneficial manner. We have looked at Nest Realty official website, academic journals, and any other source we feel could contribute to the success of this project. This memo summarizes some of the work my teammates and I have done so far.

Findings
While doing our research on Nest Realty my teammates and I have come up with two ideas that we would like to propose to this company. Thus ideas are: making it mandatory that each employee has a LinkedIn profile, and also suggesting that Nest Realty does a better job with communicating with clients and followers on social media. Although, some employees do have a LinkedIn profile, we feel that it would be more beneficial to the company as a whole if everyone created a LinkedIn account. When it comes to communicating with clients and followers on social media, we feel it would be useful if Nest actually responded to some of the post they receive on their Facebook page instead of simply “liking” it. This will present a more engaging atmosphere with the company and its clients through social media.  Collectively, these ideas will build a stronger relationship between the realtor and client, which in turn could increase Nest Realty’s chances of a buy or sale.

Focus of Report
We will zone in on how these findings would most benefit Nest’s social media presences. We are hoping that from this information Nest will have even more of a successful buying/selling rate within their company.

Obstacles and Needs
Every collaborative report does not come easy. I do believe some of the obstacles my group will face is lack of communication with each other, and Nest. With this being a online course, times of communication can vary between group members and clients. As far as needs are concerned, it is a necessity that their is an ample amount of information about our client (Nest Realty). We can’t form a report about a group, that doesn’t provide its viewers with the proper background information.

Outline for Draft
As a draft for this project, we will conjoin all of our data we’ve found about Nest’s social media presences and form it into a white paper. This white paper will be given to Nest as a suggestive tool they could use to maintain or enhance their social media presences.

For the most part we will stick with our two main concepts about Nest. Which are: making it mandatory for individual realtors to have a LinkedIn profile, and also Nest should communicate more with clients and followers on social media.

Intention Essay

In my business writing course at UNCW, one of the main outcomes that I utilize the most is to “learn strategies for collaborating with colleagues in online and culturally diverse environments.” I will find this to be the most useful in my professional career since I’m majoring in Clinical Research. This aspect of the medical field does majority of their communication online; whether that’s between people here in the U.S or others within various countries nationwide. With every project, obstacles are destined to arise. Some obstacles/ issues I believe may arise while completing my Nest Realty project for this course is not being able to get in touch with my group partners, or not having a clear understanding of the outcomes of this project. Ways I plan to overcome these issues are to keep an open line of communication with my group partners, and also with my professor. This will enable me to have a clear understanding of what component of the project is my responsibility so that my  partners are not picking up my slack. Also, with being able to communicate with my professor, I’m able to have all my questions answered should they occur. In correlation to my future career in Clinical Research it is crucial to communicate with colleagues and project managers to ensure the assignments are being done properly and promptly.
I have learned so much from this course thus far. For example, conciseness is a major skill I am able to take away from this course. With majority of our assignments having a word count restriction, I had to learn how to pick and choose the concepts and ideas I felt were the most supportive of my argument in order to narrow down my message. More specifically, from this project I’m expecting to learn how an actual business uses social media. Since I’ve learned about each concept separately, such as the three rhetorical appeal (pathos, logos, and ethos), and visual rhetoric.  I’m eager to see how they work together collectively. I will be further examining the way these social media interactions impact the business itself. With every project that involves a business I believe some background research should be done first. With that being said I think me watching a interview with an associate of Nest Realty enabled me to get a better understanding of what the business does and how. Now I’m able to look at their social media sites, and have a more improved perspective of what they are saying.
In this Business Writing course we have covered many concepts, but I find rhetorical appeals to be the most useful for this project. I’m interested to see how Nest Realty uses logos, ethos, and pathos on social media to contribute to the overall success of their business and its credibility. I think this project and the skills I gain upon its completion will only help me to have a better understanding of how crucial social media presences can be. I think I will be more sensitive to detecting proper or improper social media tactics for any business I work for after graduation.

Black-owned hair companies and the issues of natural hair in the work force: Soultanicals

Executive summary
In today’s society, discrimination against natural hair has become prevalent amongst the African American community. Although this is a rising issue, many black-owned natural hair care businesses, that use solely natural products, continue to thrive. For example, Soultanicals is one of the most notorious black-owned businesses amongst the natural hair community today. I will be examining this particular company’s communication on Facebook and how they express love and belonging,  and also how their credibility is affected by their social media presence.

Introduction
Some women within the African American community choose to go natural to have healthier hair, while others enjoy the look it brings. Although discrimination against natural hair does exist in our workplace today many women still choose this journey.

According to the Natural Hair RULES blog, many African American women feel that “as we work in the corporate world, we often have to find the balance between self-acceptance and socially acceptable hair in the workplace.” This implies that women can not be completely comfortable with who they are, while maintaining a well-paying job in the corporate world. To be accepted, an individual must choose either their hair (self-acceptance), or their job. As a result, the issue of natural hair in the workplace is relevant to many businesses today because many women are constantly pursuing careers while maintaining their natural curls.

Soultanicals was established in 2011 in Brooklyn, New York which is the location from which they ship their customers products. The foundation of this company was built on being  “an earthy, self-love collection of hand-crafted, soul-infused, melanin-inspired, body/hair love products made with a unique blend of organic, plant-based, herbal, and African botanical ingredients.” From this, it's clear that Soultanicals appeals to their audience's emotions and psychological needs by love and belonging. Like any other self-owned business, Soultanicals communicates with their customers through social media. Some of the social media sites  they utilize the most are: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and their official website at Soultanicals- Afro Vegan, Handmade Natural Hair Care …

With social media being a major resource for communication, it's also where positive and negative comments can be made by customers or  could be viewed by potential customers  as well. This in turn could influence the credibility of a business. Since the concept of love and belonging are at the basis of this company, they craft every product to enhance their consumers personal curl patterns. For example, if a particular natural person with type 4 hair uses this product but doesn’t feel their curls were enhanced they may make a negative review of the product on social media. This in turn could make a potential consumer with type 4 hair refrain from purchasing this product. On the contrary, if the experience of the person with type 4 hair was great then the review would be positive thus creating more purchases of that product for Soultanicals.

Alongside credibility and love and belonging, warranting principle also plays another key role in social media presences. Warranting principle is defined as credible information about a person in online contexts when that information cannot be easily manipulated by the person in question. For example, in Figure 1 it is evident that Soultanicals has 4.6 out of the 5 possible stars. There are 5,898 people that like this page and/or company. Soultanicals is not in control of any of these numbers shown. As a result, potential consumers have only factual information to make their decision about whether they should purchase from Soultanicals or not.

Previous Approaches
With credibility being a crucial aspect to a businesses success it’s unfortunate that a frequently used type of communication-social media- could cause it to weaken. Many people use social media as an outlet for their experiences. For example, customers of Soultanicals take reviews very seriously. The owner Ayo, even request that specific well-known natural hair bloggers review her products. This creates an opportunity for the negative responses to hinder a company's credibility.

Figure 2 is a review made about Soultanicals on Facebook. As it appears, the customer is infuriated about how long it has taken her to receive her products. Although the products are pleasing to the customer, she finds the shipping time to be unacceptable. With
ethos playing such a huge role in credibility this customer refers to it directly by stating how Soultanicals “seems dishonest to consumers”

In return, the owner of Soultanicals- Ayo- responded to this negative review by saying what is given in figure 3. With this posting Soultanicals is restoring their credibility by acknowledging the downfall in their business, and working on improving them. This shows how this company is very personable with their customers. Although, Soultanicals may have some issues they are willing and able to fix them and create a better experiences for their customers.

New Findings
Majority of the negative reviews about Soultanicals were in regards to the shipping time of their products. As of October 2, 2015 they have streamlined their shipping processes to implement a quicker shipping time. As a result, all orders will be shipped out within 24-48 hours.

Majority of other black-owned natural hair care companies are unable to fill orders within this short period of time. With that being said, this new change to the company not only satisfies the concerns of many previous customers, it also lures in new customers. Thus making Soultanicals even more competitive in the market of natural hair products. Also. this adjustment touched on three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos.

Figure 4 is the flyer Soultanicals used to communicate this change on social media. They posted it on Facebook, Instagram, and on their official website. Soultanicals made an honest decision to make this change by listening to the interest of their customers, which in turn made them more credible. In the midst of the downfall in their business, Soultanicals still sympathized with their customers and ensured them of a better experience with their next purchase and used these facts to implement this change.

Conclusion
A company’s involvement on social media plays a huge role in how successful their business is. Love and belonging, credibility, warranting principle are all intertwined in the social media presences of Soultanicals on Facebook. Although these things work together, there is also some significance to each concept individually. Soultanicals will advance further if they continue to keep the wants and needs of their customers at the forefront, keep an open line of communication between them and the customers, and also continue to use constructive criticism as building blocks to their company’s success.

Service Learning Project Debrief (Critical Reflection)

Within my Writing for Business course with Dr. Lance Cummings we were assigned a Service Learning Project. This project allows us to work collaboratively with our other classmates and utilize all of the concepts covered throughout the course. Through this project I have learned how to work with others electronically. In my other course, majority of the time I met in person with my other partners on an assignment, but with this class being solely online I had to rely on the perks of google drive.  I believe that working collaboratively online for this project has created an addition to my skill set. Being that I am pursuing a career in Clinical Research, where all projects and assignments are online, I feel as though I’ve learned a lot about what to expect in the near future. Within this type of career, I will be in communication with people all over the world and working on conjoined assignments with them; therefore, it was very beneficial for me to enroll in this course and complete this service learning project.
There are a few outcomes depicted in our course syllabus that I feel apply to this service learning project . For example, per our syllabus,  “Identify how digital technologies and contexts influence business writing and consider critically the unique affordance and constraints of diverse modalities of writing (alphabetic, visual, aural) and social media. (WI 2, WI 4)”, and “Learn strategies for collaborating with colleagues in online and culturally diverse environments.”  Throughout this course I have learned a lot about how the three rhetorical appeals affect social media presence. We have also recently discussed visual rhetoric and have applied this concept to our project as well. I feel that these ideas covered in the course have helped me to gain a better understanding of all the components that play a part in how social media is perceived and maintained in the business world. Before this class, I never thought about all the effort it takes to create a well-rounded social media presence.
Collaboration with colleagues is another skill I gained from this project. In my other course I was usually able to meet with my assigned partners to discuss the ins and out of our project, but in this course that wasn’t possible. As a team, we solely relied on google drive as we collectively edited and added information to the project. We also utilized email if we had any questions or concerns. In some aspects we did fail to communicate. That was simply because of busy schedules, and the timing of us all being at our computers. Sometimes it would take a few days to get a response to an email or to respond to comments left on the project. In the end, I feel that my colleagues and I came together and produced a well-rounded analysis of Nest Realty.
From this service learning project I learned everything I intended to and more. In the beginning, I was eager to see how Nest utilized the three rhetorical appeals in correlation with their social media presence. By the end of this project, I had a clear understanding of how Nest portrays itself as credible, and what tactics they could use in order for them to enhance their ethos within social media.  I also learned the importance and benefits of being able to electronically collaborate with others. Since this project was an analysis of Nest Realty’s social media presence, I feel that my partners and I had to focus on the influence visual rhetoric, ethos, pathos, and logos had on their social media presence, and what we would suggest to them in order to broaden their scope within social media. For example, we suggested that Nest make it mandatory for all of their employees to create and maintain a LinkedIn profile page. We felt that this would create a better ethos for the company, and would also promote a better relationship with a prospective client and employer. If a client is able to look up the credentials of a realtor then they will be more likely to feel comfortable with buying or selling a home with them.

Using Pictures Ethically

When we see various pictures on the Internet, whether that's through google searchers or various other search engines, many of us do not think about the rights those pictures encompass or the ethical usage of them. Personally, I had not true knowledge of this until we just got to this particular project in my Business Writing Course at UNCW.

Last time, I came to you all talking about slidecast, and how effective and cool they were. Now I want to discuss with you some of the images I will be using on slidecast project. I will also be going  more in depth about how I will be using these photos ethically.

There are three different ways to ethically use photos; which are fair use, creative commons and original. Fair use is any copying of copyrighted material that's done for limited and trans-formative purposes. In other words, this type of copyright is used without having to obtain permission from the copyright owner.

Both of these images are examples of fair use. I found them by simply using Google search.

Creative commons is defined as the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. To be more simplistic, creative commons is a simple and standardized way to give public permission to use and share your work. These photos can only be find when a particular creative commons search engine is used.

The above images are examples of those that are of creative commons. To obtain these images I used the creative commons provided to me by my professor (http://search.creativecommons.org/).

I will be using these images as graphics on my upcoming slidecast project. I feel they all contribute to the argument I'm creating regarding how Linkedin can be useful in the social media presence of real estate companies, and how it increases ones chances of finding a job.

The Perks of Google Presentations!

In my business writing course at UNCW, we are utilizing Google to create presentations. Here is the slide I created as an example of how to use PowerPoint on Google.

I chose to talk about LinkedIn because I think its very useful for many college students to utilize this resource when searching for jobs. The design of this slide was very beneficial to the concept of rhetoric. The color I chose for my slide was very subtle, it wasn't too bright, and didn't distract the viewer. I made the writing and the background color of the bubbles different to create a bit of contrast. I also kept my wording to a minimum, but I was still able to describe the photos and provide the necessary details to show people why this resource could be favorable to them. Its not visible in this photo but I was also able to incorporate some animations into this slide. I created it so that each photo and cluster of words would enter in from different sides of the slide by a click of the mouse. This made the slide more fun for the viewers

Slidecast: What are they?

For those of you that aren't familiar with slidecast, they are audio presentations combined with a slideshow without the presenter. In other words, they are like PowerPoint slides that are easily understood, but there's not presenter, just words and graphics. Cool right?

Watch this video below.

What did you think from the video? It was interesting right! I was amazed of how clear the message was in this slidecast without a presenter speaking on each point. I thought the layout was great. There were fun colors, and the comparison to hide and seek was phenomenal. The viewer was engaged throughout the presentation. In this slidecast, there was a great use of contrast with the font and background colors. None of the segments were too hard on the eyes, and the speed of each was perfect. The viewer had just the right amount of time to read and understand the point made on each slide. Overall, Billy Phillips did a great job on expressing his thoughts on  the question "Where's God?"

What about Twitter?

As I've mentioned to my group members, I believe that Nest Realty should give Twitter a shot with expanding their social media presence. They have already established a social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and somewhat Youtube. I think Twitter would just deepen their horizon.

I believe that some people view Twitter to be somewhat useless, but in my opinion its a quick way for a company to advertise, and show their expertise. Instead of making a extensive status on Facebook, a realtor could just post a sentence on Twitter and it can be seen by so many people. Here is an example of how a realtor is using Twitter:
In this example you can see how Twitter is very similar to Instagram. A realtor is able to post pictures of houses and other properties, specials or events going on in the area. One key thing about Twitter is that these post can be seen by a previous client, retweeted to where its now visible on their news feed, which in turn presents the opportunity for future followers and potential clients to see it and gain interest,

Overall, even though Nest thinks that social media can be a little much at times. I do think if they began to utilize twitter it would only expand their clientele. There's no harm in trying out new social media sites in order to have a well-rounded conclusion of what works best for their company.

Types of social media used in realty- What are the best ones?

I've been doing some research to figure out the types of social media used in Nest Realty and other realtor brokerages, and which social media sites work the best. I'm fascinated by all of the useful information I've found thus far. As many of you know, social media plays a huge role in our society today. Whether that's people's social life, or businesses methods of communication on social media.
There are many different types of social media used in realty. Some of which are Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook. Many would think that these Realtors use these sites as sales pitch, but that's very rarely the case. During my research I found a realtor company in Manhattan that has recently made a transition to social media. To build a relationship with their followers, maybe even potential clients, "they post information ranging from restaurant recommendations to neighborhood happenings - which over time builds the relationships and trust that may eventually turn fans into clients." I found this to be very clever. It makes the increase of their clientele much more subtle. They don't just hop on social media and try to lure people in directly, which greatly benefits their ethos
While doing my research I found the most unexpected social media site- LinkedIn. NorthMarq- a Bloomington- based company did a online perception research study in order to determine if LinkedIn or Facebook were the go-to site to search for information on the professionals within that company. I was really surprised by this, I thought most people would still utilize Facebook to look up personal information about their realtor. Even though LinkedIn was the more utilized site for this particular company that still doesn't necessarily mean that LinkedIn is the better social media site. I think in order to find the best site for Nest Realty or any other company, it will take trial and error. With that, Nest should be on every social media site (ie:Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, LinkedIn) in order to see which particular site they get the most feedback and followers. Thus being able to see what the best social media site it for their company.

Nest Realty and Ethos

Nest Realty is a brokerage that my classmates and I will be researching for our project in my UNCW business writing course. They have many components to their business that makes them out shine the other companies her in Wilmington, NC

Ethos is one term we have discussed heavily in my Business Writing course. For those that are unaware of what this term means, it is one of the rhetorical appeals (pathos and logos are the others) and it can be simply referred to as the credibility or character of a company.

From examining Nest Realty's official website at http://www.nestrealty.com/wilmington/ I have seen the outstanding amount of effort and dedication that went into building a brand for this company. They have definitely stayed up-to-date with the latest trends in design of the website and training the various employees. Majority of the time when companies are mainly based off of commission, competition can be a major issue. Another thing that I really found amazing about Nest, was that each realtor didn't see each other as a competitor, more so as a family member. This made the credibility of Nest more reliable, because new clients will be assured in knowing that their realtor is not just viewing them as another piece of commission they can get to before the next, but they are solely concerned with making the client feel comfortable in every aspect of their buying or selling process.

 (Figure 1)
Figure 1 is a picture of how I believe Nest showed some character on their website. I like how they used one of the "magic numbers" to make some aspects of their company stand out. In one of my previous blogs, I stated that the usage of magical numbers creates a easier read for the interested client and a quicker response for the company. I believe Nest did just that with this asset to their website. When the prospective client sees these "3 ways Nest isn't like the rest" they will have something to compare to other potential companies without having to search too deep, and/or they will have 3 more concrete reason why Nest fits better with their wants and needs of buying or selling a home.

Short and Sweet: White Papers

Previously, I spoke to you all about "magical numbers" and how they impact business-like messages in social media. Now, I will be discussing where exactly I got the idea of "magical numbers", white papers.

White papers are advocates for solutions that will fit the customers needs. In other words, these documents summarize why a specific approach will work. Within my Business Writing course at UNCW I was directed to Purdue OWL, to get a better explanation of white-papers. I would recommend going to this site for further details. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/546/1/

To tie all of this together. I would like to research how white papers are useful in business marketing? Is there any way they could be harmful to a business?

For an assignment in my business course we had to find an example of a white paper. I believe the one I chose was very good at exemplifying all the required components. Just so you all can have a better look at what my research question will be examining, here you go http://www.thatwhitepaperguy.com/downloads/Response_Rates_white_paper.pdf

How do "magical numbers" help build logos in social media?

The youtube video "How to Write a White Paper for Business Writing" by Melbourne SEO Services(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mil0FPYIDRU) the magical numbers are 3,5, and 7, which are used to provide the audience with facts or tips in support of the main topic. These are said to be the numbers that stick out the most to an audience. Logos is defined as the "factual" rhetorical appeal, which is a term I've learned within my Business Writing course at UNCW.

To further expand on my previous research question, I want to research how these "magical numbers" can provide a more factual appeal to the information businesses post on social media. Personally, I believe if  factual information is given by saying "5 ways to do...", or "3 reasons why.." it allows the to audience to process the information much easier, thus creating a quicker response.

                                                                (Figure 1)

Above, figure 1 gives a good example as to how PCMag uses the magical number idea in order to make their topic more persuasive and easy to read. I think the 3 examples they gave, allowed them to provide the audience with just enough information to prove to them why a Apple Car is necessary. Also, the amount of facts they provided didn't make the post an excessive length.

How does ethos help build social proof?

Within this blog I will be researching how ethos is used within social media to help build the social proof of a business. For a particular business, I will be looking at the wireless cellular network Verizon. From the previous blog I posted, I discussed how a negative message (posted by PCMag about Verizon) on social media can impact the credibility of a company. Now I will be looking more closely as to how this credibility directly relates to the creation of social proof. Social proof is defined as the "informational social influence" ( (Shwom and Synder). In other words, its practiced when a company uses numbers and facts about their business in order to leer in a new purchaser.

Reviews about Verizon wireless is one primary resource I will be analyzing for my research question."Top 3,036 Complaints and Reviews about Verizon Wireless"is the consumers affairs site I'm researching. Verizon has one star, which depicts them to have very poor customer service and lacking in many other areas within their company. On the consumer affairs site, there's many reviews that say things like "Verizon's customer service is awful."," I couldn't make them understand that I did not cause this damage... I even had an otter case on it. No matter what I said I was to blame.", "I am considering a class action suit against Verizon". All of these remarks are downturns in Verizon's credibility. As a result, causing the social proof to decline as well.  Since the social proof provided within these reviews are negative, new purchasers will be less likely to consume services from Verizon.

For a secondary research method, I will be looking at a journal provided by the University of North Carolina Wilmington. This journal states that "credibility of social media is one of the key factors initiating and further increasing public engagement and communication effectiveness in the digital/so
cial media." This article more specifically states "Recently, it has been suggested that the credibility of the channel/medium of communication influences the selective involvement of the audience with the medium (Metzger et al., 2003)"  From this, its understood that credibility directly produces social proof. One thing from this article that I found to be closely related to my research about reviews is that the "individual members of public are starting to demand participatory communication with and from organizations." Thus implying, that posting reviews about a particular company has become a major aspect of communication on social media, and is also very effective on the companys credibility. Although, this journal was about blogs, I believe it can be used to describe many other social media mediums as well.

Lastly, quantitative data has a major impact on how ethos of a business builds social proof. If a purchaser is able to see numbers that are positive/negative, then that will directly affect if they will support what the business has to offer or not. For example, when looking at the "Top 3,036 Complaints and Reviews about Verizon Wireless" its implied that Verizon is not the best network to choose. If a company has that many negative reviews/complaints, then a potential consumer will swiftly turn away from their services. As a result, ethos is not being viewed positively. On the contrary nor is the social proof perceiving this company to be credible. Additionally, a current consumer with bad experiences from the company may see this quantitative data as a way to speak out about their experiences as well. In today's businesses, people are more likely to post reviews of their negative experiences with a company rather than their positive ones.

Negative messages on social media

Many of us are aware that social media has become one of the top forms of communication in today's world of business. Various companies use some type of social media to kickoff their business and establish credibility, or to stay connected with their consumers. With that being said, social media has inclined to a key component of whether a business thrives to its fullest potential or not.

On the contrary, social media can also be the downfall of a business. Above, I have inserted an example of a negative message that can be seen on social media. This particular posting was made on Facebook by PCMag regarding the cellular network Verizon. PCMag is a lab-based company that reviews consumer electronics, business technology, and internet products. One exceptional thing about PCMag is that they give independent reviews of the latest products and companies to ensure that people are receiving the highest quality for their money. In spite of Verizon being the leading cellular network provider, they are still well-known for their excessive charges and gimmicks to draw customers in or to extend existing customers’ contracts.

This facebook post by PCMag really zones in on the specifics of how Verizon "screws over customers". Many of the negative examples in this post have once been viewed as positive options within Verizon. This in turn, creates an image of Verizon as falsifiers and unrealiable, and also causes them to loose some credibility. Liking is a another concept within business writing that is portrayed in this post. As this image circles the web, more and more people are prone to post their negative experiences with Verizon because they are able to relate. With that being said, its less likely that people will choose this company for their cellular services, or even renew their contracts with them.
